e-Invoice (e-Fatura)Q&A

Unit Codes in e-Invoices: C62 or NIU for Pieces?

Kafatura Editorial Team Published: 2 min read

Last checked against regulations: September 29, 2026

Short answer

In e-invoices, C62 is used for pieces. NIU means "number of international units" and does not mean pieces. Kilogram is written as KGM, liter as LTR, meter as MTR, set as SET, pair as PR, box as BX and pack as PA.

Unit Codes in e-Invoices: C62 or NIU for Pieces?

e-Invoice (e-Fatura) unit codes use international standard codes to show what the quantity on an invoice line represents (pieces, kilograms, liters, sets…). The correct code for pieces is C62. NIU, on the other hand, means "number of international units" and should not be used in place of pieces.

C62 or NIU for pieces?

The answer is C62. Both codes come from the UN/ECE unit code list, but their meanings differ: C62 means "one," that is, a single item or a single piece; NIU means "number of international units." For a T-shirt, mug or phone case you sell on a marketplace, the line unit should be C62.

In some software, the "Piece" (Adet) option may be mapped to the NIU code; check your settings. Even if your invoice is technically delivered, the buyer's accounting system may misinterpret the unit, causing problems in stock and cost records.

Examples for marketplace sellers

  • Textiles and accessories: T-shirt, bag, case → C62. Socks or shoes sold as pairs → PR.
  • Set products: Duvet cover set, knife set → SET. If you sell the set as a single product, C62 can also be used; what matters is staying consistent with the product listing.
  • Products sold by weight: Nuts, coffee → KGM or GRM. Products sold by volume, such as detergent or olive oil → LTR.
  • Products sold by length or area: Fabric, cable → MTR; carpet or wallpaper → MTK.
  • Service lines: E48 (service unit) for services such as installation, HUR for hourly work.

The unit on the invoice line should match the product listing on the marketplace and your stock record. If you sell a 1 kg pack as a piece, the unit is C62 and the quantity is 1; if you sell by weight, use KGM. Setting up this mapping correctly once in your integration software also prevents quantity errors during stock synchronization.

Common mistakes with unit codes

  1. Choosing NIU for pieces: The correct code is C62.
  2. Using package codes as units: Package codes with the X prefix (such as XBX) indicate the packaging type and are invalid as units. Use BX for box and PA for pack.
  3. Entering free text: Abbreviations that are not in the code list, such as "ad" or "adet" (piece), must not be entered in the unit field.
  4. Leaving the unit inconsistent with the quantity: Showing a 250-gram product with the KGM unit and a quantity of 250 makes the quantity appear a thousand times larger; the correct entry is 0.25 KGM or 250 GRM.

Frequently asked questions

Is using NIU in an e-invoice a mistake?

Yes, when it is used to mean pieces; NIU is the number of international units. C62 should be selected for pieces.

Can the XBX code be used for a box?

No. Package codes with the X prefix are invalid as units; BX is used for a box.

e-Invoice (e-Fatura)Q&A

Can an e-Invoice Taxpayer Issue a Paper Invoice?

No. Taxpayers who use e-invoices are also covered by the e-archive system. If the buyer is an e-invoice user, you issue an e-invoice; otherwise (including end consumers), you issue an e-archive invoice. If a paper invoice is issued, the document is treated as never issued, and a separate penalty applies to each document.
